Abstract
"Big data" has led to significant innovation and disruption in many sectors. However, this has yet to materialise in the construction sector. The wealth of building data originating from Building Information Models (BIM) can serve a wide variety of applications including enabling automated projection of building energy use, in a faster turnaround, and ease the integration of Building Energy Modelling (BEM) into the design process. This is while currently BEM is a stand-alone, labour-intensive exercise. This opinion paper, investigates the current state of the market usage of BIM for BEM, critiques the quality of the BIM data and open data formats, and discusses the main challenges and developed methodologies. It then proposes a mixed approach for achieving a complete BEM using BIM and other data sources.
