Abstract
The requirements of infrared astronomy and satellite meteorology have stimulated the recent development of interference filters for wavelengths beyond 50 mu m. This article considers briefly the problems and performance of all-dielectric multilayer interference filters for this wavelength region but the main emphasis of the review is on the use of metallic mesh as the reflecting interfaces in interference devices. Using these elements it is now possible to design and fabricate bandpass and low-pass filters down to wavelengths as short as 50 mu m.
