Abstract
An expert system to aid in the design of assemblies of parts is described. The system allows an expert designer to specify a design in terms of the components in it and their main attributes together with definitions of the relationships between components. An instance of this design can then be produced by the system when the independent input parameters are supplied. The output from the system is in a form suitable for input to a geometric modeller to allow geometric models to be built up. The system is written in the logic programming language PROLOG.
