Abstract

The traditional approach to generate an abruptly focusing Airy (AFA) beam includes the spatial light modulator (SLM) and Fourier transform (FT) lens. These bulky optical components hamper the miniaturization of optical systems. Metasurfaces provide a unique approach to realize flat optical components at the subwavelength scale. An ultra-thin metasurface is used to generate an AFA beam. The local polarisation and phase of incident light are manipulated by controlling the rotation angles of nano-pillars. The resultant AFA is experimentally verified at the designed wavelength of 650nm. We envision this device would open a new path for particle manipulation and Airy lasers.
