Abstract
The encounter between different generations in public spaces has been identified as an indicator of improved environmental quality and quality of life for communities. Intergenerational relationships and affectivity enable the transmission, reproduction, and transformation of the social world within its ethical and political contexts, where emotions serve as a mediating and empowering dimension in the process of action/transformation of urban spaces.
Although research on intergenerational relationships in urban environments has advanced, studies focusing specifically on affectivity and sense of place remain scarce. From a socio-environmental and affective perspective, this study aimed to understand how intergenerational interaction—based on appropriation and emotional connections—can enhance person–environment relationships and urban life.
The research involved a case study in the Vicente Pinzón neighbourhood in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, where semi-structured interviews and affective mapping were conducted with young and older residents. The findings indicate a generally positive perception of the neighbourhood among both age groups. However, there is also a recurring dissatisfaction related to insecurity and the perceived neglect of the area by public authorities. Despite these challenges, the community shows a strong desire to manage and improve their spaces, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to strengthening their territory.
