Abstract

We discuss a subtlety which arises in the definition of the fermion number of a soliton in a finite volume fermion-soliton system. We show that the total charge of the system is either integral or half-integral, and we derive an expression for the charge which is localized on the soliton itself. The latter can be fractional and we examine its quantum fluctuations.
