Effectiveness of Education in Changing Morality

Abstract

Most financial crimes are facilitated by ignorance of gatekeepers. Ignoring irregularities is irresponsible as well as breach of duty. It is illegal and is also a moral wrong against people. It rooted to the question of morality. This study examines the extent and effectiveness of moral education in changing perspective. Data are collected by way questionnaire and published information from individuals who are currently pursuing accounting and finance at higher learning institutions in Malaysia. Descriptive analysis and independent t-test are applied. Result from this study reveals that, among others, almost 90% of accounting and/or finance undergraduates in Malaysia receive moral and/or governance curriculum in the cause of their studies. The education, however, is unable to change individual moral value and reasoning ability.
