Abstract
We report the observation of cw optical bistability at room temperature in a lead chalcogenide semiconductor. By the transmission of CO laser radiation through an n-type sample of Pb1-xSnxSe, optically bistable switching of the Fabry-Perot etalon was observed with switching powers of 3 mW. The results are consistent with a dispersive nonlinearity induced by a thermal shift of the bandgap. © 1987.
