Abstract

Coquina is a lacustrine carbonate rock formed by the accumulation of bioclasts, mainly bivalve shells. It constitutes an important hydrocarbon reservoir in Brazil, related to pre-salt recent discoveries. The complexity and heterogeneity of these rocks make them a challenge in terms of reservoir modeling. The poro-perm system of this reservoir is directly influenced by the type and the intensity of diagenetic processes. Diagenesis is the main factor to set the porosity: pore types and their connectivity, thereby defining their petrophysical characteristics. The understanding of the diagenetic history of coquinas is the key to understand the evolution of porosity in time and space. This paper shows the link between diagenetic facies and petrophysical properties. This allows better definition and prediction of the distribution of flow units and consequently a better planning of exploration and exploitation.
