    Abstract

Selected phenotypic characters, melting temperature of chromosomal DNA and DNA sequence homology have been determined for 10 strains of Thermoactinomyces thalpophilus and reference strains of T. vulgaris, T. putidus, T. sacchari and 'T. candidus'. All strains conformed to their respective species descriptions and all DNA base compositions were between 48.7 and 52.2 mol% guanine plus cytosine. The 'T. candidus' strain was phenotypically indistinguishable from the T. vulgaris neotype strain. Ten strains of T. thalpophilus showed greater than 60% sequence homology with DNA from T. thalpophilus CUB 808. The T. vulgaris, T. sacchari and T. putidus strains shared little DNA homology with each other or the T. thalpophilus strains. The 'T. candidus' strain shared 68% DNA sequence homology with the T.vulgaris strain reinforcing the suggestion that these species are synonymous.
