Abstract

This paper considers the performance of digital subscriber lines (DSL) in the presence of impulse noise in terms of data errors. Impulse noise is one of the biggest impairments for xDSL systems. An analysis of error statistics of transmitted data for two popular versions of xDSL - ADSL (asymmetric DSL) and SHDSL (single-pair high-speed DSL) - is reported. On the basis of a recent novel impulse noise model, a model of the impact of impulse noise on higher protocol levels has been developed. Specifics of framing for the different DSL versions have also been taken into account. Simulation results for statistics of data error due to impulse noise based on the new byte level models are presented.
