Critical Pedagogy and Artist-Teacher

Research output: Other contribution

Abstract

This study aims to understand the concept of critical pedagogy and to consider how important it is for an artist-teacher to be aware of the theory, themes, and issues within this field. Criticism is a custom in art classes, and often works are assessed from a set viewpoint, a rigid attitude that damages the student's creative ability. However, critical pedagogy campaigns a parallel idea and champions freedom of expression. To underpin this parallel idea of critical pedagogy in an art class, the study investigates the concept and its influence on art education. The study also examines whether it is important for an artist-teacher to be familiar with the themes of critical pedagogy and how critical pedagogy can help in a visual classroom practice. For clarity, the discussion of critical pedagogy and its concepts is introduced first. Next, an examination of the nexus between critical pedagogy and art education follows. In addition, the study examines how critical pedagogy can reshape the practice of an artist-teacher. These examinations include a brief account of various scholarly works. Finally, conclusions are drawn about the position of a ‘critical pedagogical artist-teacher’ in the light of the aforementioned questions.
