Abstract

Spatiotemporal chaos occurs when motion excited in local regions interact to destroy the spatial coherence of the system concurrent with the onset of temporal chaos. An algorithm for controlling systems based on the idea of stabilization of unstable periodic patterns in spatiotemporal chaos is presented. A numerical demonstration of stabilization of spatial periodic patterns embedded in turbulence in a PDE system describing a high aspect ratio laser is also presented. The control algorithm following feedback control strategy using a feedback signal derived from one of the variables is assigned to perturb this variable. Also discussed is the generality and robustness of this control algorithm and its implementation in experiments.
