Abstract
Kandinsky believed material entities were devoid of any spiritual content.
Perhaps the spiritual quest and practice had opened up his mind to a higher
order, a dimension known only to a few people. In order to pass on his spiritual
findings, Kandinsky set out to revolutionise the world of art with his shapes,
style, and writings. However, what was the inspiration behind his spiritual
journey, and how does he explain the functioning of shapes in the spiritual realm?
This study aims to examine these questions and understand Kandinsky’s view of
shapes and their spiritual working. For clarity, the discussion of shapes is first
introduced, and the levels on which they function are investigated. Next follows
an examination of Kandinsky’s spiritual inspiration and thought, and a
description of his shapes, including a brief account of other published works.
Finally, conclusions are drawn about Kandinsky’s concept of spiritual shapes
in the light of the aforementioned question.
