Abstract

This work reports on the properties of a compact annular CO2 laser using a novel excitation scheme which is readily scalable to larger areas, while maintaining both uniform excitation and exhibiting an unbroken optical output. The multimode laser output power currently exceeds 200 W at an efficiency of 13% for a case I waveguide resonator for (with discharge area of 277 cm2, a length of 26 cm and electrode spacing of 2 mm). This laser is be expected to produce output powers of over 0.5 kW based on a specific area scaling of 20 kWm-2, applicable to discharges with a thickness of around 2 mm. This paper assesses the properties of the waveguide modes produced in the case I annular resonator and their effects on the laser output beam in the near and far field as a function of mirror alignment.
