Biophilic Healthcare Architecture: Conceptual Insights from Liv Hospital Ulus

Biophilic design is increasingly recognized as a critical factor in enhancing patient recovery and staff well-being in healthcare environments. A substantial body of literature demonstrates that access to natural light, greenery, and natural materials can reduce stress, improve recovery times, and foster positive staff experiences. This paper examines the integration of these principles in Liv Hospital Ulus, Istanbul, as an illustrative example of contemporary hospital design. The study draws on doctoral research observations, including site visits, spatial analysis, and photographic documentation, but does not present direct quantitative data from patients or staff at the hospital. Instead, the discussion links architectural features at Liv Hospital with findings from existing research, highlighting how biophilic principles are embedded in practice. While the case underscores the potential benefits of nature-based interventions, the absence of empirical hospital-specific evaluation remains a limitation. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for systematic post-occupancy studies to validate the measurable impacts of biophilic healthcare design.
