Abstract

This chapter explores the integration of bioeconomy principles into the asphalt pavement industry to enhance sustainability. Emphasizing the use of bio-based materials as substitutes for conventional ones, it highlights their potential to drive cleaner production and environmental sustainability. By leveraging renewable resources and circular economy concepts, bioeconomy strategies offer opportunities for low-carbon economies and biodiversity protection. The chapter discusses the impacts of various bio-based materials on asphalt pavement characteristics, examining both benefits and drawbacks. Conclusions and recommendations are provided to guide future research and foster sustainable development in asphalt pavement construction. As a result of the significant environmental impact of the asphalt pavement industry, we investigate how bioeconomy principles may lead to more sustainable practices in the asphalt pavement industry in this chapter. One strategy for promoting the bioeconomy is to use bio-based materials as substitutes for conventional materials in asphalt pavement production. This chapter presents a synopsis of current research on the use of bio-based materials in asphalt production and their potential to contribute to the bioeconomy and drive sustainable development in the pavement sector. The bioeconomy for sustainable building and construction is compatible with cleaner production and environmental sustainability. It entails using renewable bio-based resources, circular economy ideas, and cutting-edge technologies to generate sustainably beneficial alternatives. Bioeconomy helps a low-carbon economy, biodiversity protection, and economic development by lowering carbon emissions, decreasing waste, and improving resource efficiency. Various bio-based materials investigated are discussed and their influences on the characteristics of the resulting asphalt pavement. The potential benefits and drawbacks of employing bio-based materials in asphalt production are also investigated. Furthermore, the conclusion, as well as future directions and recommendations, was highlighted to comprehend the prospective of bio-based materials and assess their long-term performance applications. The viability of using bio-based materials in the pavement sector is explored in this chapter, which aims to fill some knowledge gaps and aid as a nudge for researchers. Biomaterials and bioeconomy principles have the potential to drive sustainable development for a more circular economy in the asphalt pavement industry.
