Abstract

Bend loss in over-moded fibre has been measured as a function of temperature. For the LP₁₁ mode, an oscillatory loss dependence on temperature was observed, caused by coupling between the LP₁₁ mode and a `whispering gallery' mode. These interactions could have a significant effect on singlemode cutoff wavelength measurements.
