Abstract
Artificial intelligence provides a range of advanced tools for the representation of knowledge and their utilization (models and reasoning). The most important task of future systems and control engineers will be to select the most appropriate tools for the job which are available in commercially supported packages. This article presents a motivation for AI based approaches to control and proposes a classification of the solution space, in terms of modeling assumptions and knowledge, and of the problem space in terms of generic approaches to applications.
