Abstract

A calculation has been performed to analyse neutron scattering spectrum of an ion with f2 configuration in a cubic crystal field. The present analysis, using a six-interaction Hamiltonian, gives an energy-level fit which has a rms s = 15.1 relative to the experimentally observed crystal field excitations. The wave functions thus obtained were used to calculate the effective magnetic moment of UO2. The final values of interaction parameters (in cm-1) are F2 = 230.84, F4 = 39.22, F6 = 3.77, ?5f = 1968, a = 34.87, ß = - 565.68, ? = 799.07, M0 = 0.570, M2 = 0.318, M4 = 0.222, A44> = - 900.6, A66> = 195.4. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
