Abstract

Our recent efforts have been made in developing a 4 by 4 active antenna array testbed, operating at 3.5 GHz band. This paper presents the characteristics of the hardware, which provides a versatile experiment platform for physical layer wireless research including studies on power amplifier (PA) nonlinearity/modelling and its predistortion algorithms, PA active loadpulling phenomenon, inter-modulation and harmonic distortion, and physical layer wireless security systems. In addition, the development of the baseband software defined radios (SDRs) based on USRPs enabling multi-chain modulation and channel coding have also been set up and its phase calibration procedure has been presented. Combining the baseband and the radio frequency (RF) frontend, the over-the-air (OTA) experiment can be performed for different applications.
