Abstract

Japanese commercial activity in hard carbon and diamond films is widely quoted as being in advance of work in the rest of the world. This statement is verified by reference to over 100 patents of Japanese origin over the past 20 years, and the situation is discussed with regard to their industrial strategy in this field. © 1989.
