Abstract

A Pierce description of the travelling wave gyrotron (gyro-t.w.a.) has been evolved by reformulating and clarifying a linear theory of the gyrotron interaction mechanism. While the resultant analysis is inevitably approximate as a consequence of simplifications which have been introduced to highlight certain similarities between the gyro-t.w.a. and its conventional counterpart, the re-cast equations do, nevertheless, give added insight into the potential effect on gain and band-width in particular of the major parameters of the device. © 1980 Pergamon Press Ltd.
