N2 - Aging in place, at home and in familiar community surroundings, is important for maintaining wellbeing in later life. However, aging in place may not always consist of positive experiences for some older adults. For example, forced relocation, a byproduct of some neighbourhood redevelopments can impede aging in the right place. If seniors are to be supported well, then developing age-friendly communities as a part of neighbourhood regeneration initiatives requires careful consideration of affordability, access to social support and resources, and opportunities for social engagement, especially in communities characterized by diverse cultural groups. This article provides an overview of the redevelopment process highlighting the logistical details and built features an of affordable seniors’ redevelopment initiative in Western Canada. The main focus is to provide audiences with an understanding of the practical aspects of the project including: building and land planning, negotiations with multiple stakeholders, application and engagement process with tenants, decision-making for key building design features as well as key research and evaluation components.
