Research interests

Bill's research interests are primarily in the history of accounting, particularly where accounting interfaces with medical practice and within the drinks industry. Other interests are in the more contemporary interface between accounting and medical practice, the history of accounting and popular culture, management accounting practices in non Anglo-Saxon contexts and the gendering of the accountancy profession. 


Bill Jackson is the Head of Accounting, in the Department of Accountancy, Economics and Finance, which is located in the School of Social Science at Heriot-Watt University. He joined Heriot-Watt in 2002 having previously held a Teaching and Research Fellowship at the University of Edinburgh. Since 2002 Bill has held a number of roles within the School of Management and Languages, notably as: Head of the Department of Accountancy, Economics and Finance, Deputy Head of the School of Social Science, Director of Learning and Teaching for the School of Management and Languages (now the School of Social Science); Director of Internationalisation for the School of Management and Languages; Director of the Undergraduate Teaching Programme for Accountancy, Economics and Finance; Director of the MSc programmes in International Accounting and Finance and International Accounting and Management; and Chair of the Academic Standards Board for the School of Management and Languages. Bill has also held University level appointments as Chair of the University's Virtual Learning Environment Management Group and as a member of the Senate of the University.
