Research interests

My main research interest is in the area of polymer physical chemistry. Generally, research activities involve the synthesis, characterisation and study of new polymers as well as commercial materials. Over a number of years, our research group has investigated various aspects of physical behaviour from conformation and orientational order, to local structure, dynamics and physical ageing, in a wide range of polymeric materials including traditional thermoplastics, but also liquid crystalline polymers, polyurethanes, filled polymers, blends, composites. The main goal has been to establish relationships between polymer structure and properties to achieve a rational design of materials. Current research activities focus on two main areas: (1) understanding of the relationship between structure at different length scales and mechanical/rheological properties of polymers incorporating nanoparticles and (2) study of the efficiency of commercial membranes in removing fluoride and natural organic matter (NOM) as well as development of new polymer membranes for water purification. Materials are characterised and studied using laboratory standard procedures (NMR, FTIR, thermal, rheological and mechanical analysis) but we also make use of large scale facilities (small- and wide-angle neutron and X-ray scattering, quasielastic neutron scattering) for structural and dynamic investigations.
