Personal profile

Research interests

I focus on scholarship, rather than subject specific research. I am particularly interested in student engagement - specifically, potential methods for increasing student engagement. I am also interested in gamification, co-creation, the changing characteristics and needs of students, and assessment in a world of Generative AI.

Biography

I graduated with my PhD in Economics from the University of Reading in December 2007. My thesis title was 'Social Dynamics and Long-Run Urban Change' and I was supervised Prof. Geoff Meen. While at the University of Reading, I developed a passion for teaching.

I left academia due to a lack of teaching focussed opportunities and I ran my own small business in coaching and programme development for several years. I then took time out of work to raise my two daughters and to project manage our house build, before getting back into teaching through a supply teaching role at Borders College. I have worked at Heriot-Watt since November 2019. I am on a teaching and scholarship contract and I am passionate about learning and teaching.

I am a partner in the family business and deal with invoice payment and bookkeeping. I am also a qualified Level 3 Tennis Coach and do some part-time coaching with junior players.

Roles & Responsibilities

In the academic year 2024-25, I am the global course leader for one of the largest taught courses at Heriot-Watt University - the first year course 'The Economy' (829 students registered across three campuses). I manage the course and deliver both lectures and tutorials for this course. I am the global course leader for our MBA course 'Economics for Business' and the course leader for our Graduate Apprenticeship course 'Introductory Economics'. I also deliver lectures to postgraduate students on the course 'Business Economics.'

I am a Project Redesign Lead for the Edinburgh Business School (EBS) Learning and Teaching Transformation Project. I am a member of the School Studies Committee (SSC) and a member of Senate. I am Chairing the Academic Review of Chemistry and Institute of Chemical Sciences.
