Personal profile
Research interests
Susan’s research interests centre on the molecular and physiological controls that govern bacterial growth. In recent years this has extended to an interest in how to control the growth of microbial biofilms and pathogens within the food manufacturing industries. Recent collaborative work has investigated the control of Listeria monocytogenes in smoked fish, allowed the identification of natural antimicrobial substances capable of inhibiting the growth of Staph. aureus and, most recently, the pathogenicity determinants of the emerging foodborne pathogen, Arcobacter butzleri.
Biography
Susan enjoys walking and cycling in the countryside around Edinburgh and spends many happy hours in her garden in rain, hail and (less commonly in Edinburgh), shine.
