Biography

Dr. Sunita Mathur is an Assistant Professor in Edinburgh Business School in the Accounting and Finance School at Heriot-Watt University, Dubai Campus. Her PhD is in Accounting, titled “International Financial Reporting Standards and Its Financial Consequences” from Rajasthan University, India, with the equivalency from the Ministry of Education, UAE.

She brings over 25 years of teaching experience with undergraduate and postgraduate students in Canada, along with more than 12 years of academic experience at leading universities in the UAE. Since joining Heriot-Watt University Dubai as a full-time faculty member in 2016, she has held several leadership roles, including Program Director for Undergraduate Accounting and Finance, Dissertation Coordinator, Examination Officer, and Academic Lead for the Incubator. Before this, she served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Wollongong, Heriot-Watt University, and the Higher Colleges of Technology.

She also serves as Chief Examiner for the Emirates Institute of Finance, contributing to assessment quality, academic governance, and curriculum enhancement, and engaging with a nationally significant institution linked to the UAE Central Bank.

Sunita earned her Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), an advanced level of professional standing that evidences expertise in teaching and learning in higher education in the UK. The Aurora Leadership Development Program in 2025 has further developed her leadership capability. (Aurora is Advance HE’s flagship leadership development initiative for women in higher education).

CPA Australia awarded her the Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) designation in June 2020. She regularly presents at international conferences, publishes scholarly articles, and writes for media outlets. She also received the Certificate of Excellence for ‘Best Presentation/Best Content’ at the Academicsera International Conference in Rome, Italy.

Research interests

Her key research interests are Accounting Regulatory Framework, IFRS-harmonisation and convergence in emerging economies, Microfinance, Small and Medium Social (and Environmental) Reporting, Entrepreneurship, Corporate Governance–CSR, Social Capital and Sustainable Accounting in the future.
