Personal profile
Biography
I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Languages & Intercultural Studies at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, UK. With over 25 years of experience using sign language and a professional career as a qualified interpreter in both American Sign Language (ASL)/English and British Sign Language (BSL)/English, I aim to bridge academic excellence with real-world expertise.
As a practising freelance interpreter, I have worked extensively in both the UK and the US, maintaining strong ties to the interpreting profession and the wider industry. Since 2007, I have been dedicated to teaching and training interpreters, bringing a holistic approach to education that integrates traditional methods with cutting-edge innovations.
Research interests
The role of digital technology in interpreting education and practice, investigating how advancements such as AI-driven tools, remote interpreting platforms, and virtual learning environments can enhance interpreter preparation and service delivery.
I am also interested in examining how higher education institutions' systems and structures influence the successful delivery of interpreter education, with a particular focus on work readiness and equipping students for professional practice.
My teaching and research focus on fostering intercultural communication and equipping the next generation of interpreters with the skills and knowledge required to navigate complex linguistic and cultural landscapes.
Roles & Responsibilities
Teaching and Supervision
I deliver engaging and high-quality teaching across multiple levels, including 2nd-year and 4th-year interpreting/translation modules, as well as postgraduate modules in Public Service Interpreting (spoken languages). Additionally, I supervise undergraduate, MSc, and PhD students in their research dissertations, providing tailored guidance to support their academic and professional development. I also facilitate supervision sessions for advanced interpreting students, ensuring they receive the support needed to excel academically and professionally.
Administrative and Strategic Contributions
In my administrative capacity, I collaborate closely with marketing and recruitment teams to ensure our programmes are effectively promoted and attract the right candidates. I take a lead role in organising open days, showcasing the strengths of our programmes to prospective students. Furthermore, I contribute to the strategic planning and sustainability of LINCS programmes, ensuring their continued success and relevance in a competitive academic environment.
