Biography

Sally is an Associate Professor at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, based in the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering. She specialises in microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip solutions for biomedical research with interests in the biophysics of cancer and organ-on-chip technology, and a drive towards the replacement of animal models in research. She also has interests in drug delivery mechanisms, microbubbles, biosensors and single cell analysis.

Sally holds a BSc (Hons) degree in Chemistry with Forensic Science and Toxicology from the University of Hull, UK. She studied for her PhD under the supervision of Prof. Nicole Pamme, in microfluidics for clinical diagnostics, awarded in 2010. Sally went on to do a postdoc at Imperial College London (2009 - 2010) before moving onto the University of Leeds where she joined the Molecular and Nanoscale Physics Group, in the School of Physics as a PDRA developing microbubbels for drug delivery in solid tumours (2010 - 2016). In 2016, Sally was successful in obtaining her first independent position as a University Academic Fellow, jointly between the School of Physics and the School of Medicine, at the University of Leeds. As part of her independent research career, she specialised in developing organ-on-chip models for cancer research and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2022. In 2024, she moved to the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering at Heriot-Watt University.
