Paul is Professor of Civil Engineering Systems. He was the Executive Director of the Scottish Institute of Sustainable Technology, a joint venture between the Herio Watt University and the international engineering consultancy Stantec (1999-2011).
Paul Jowitt is a Past President of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) 2009-2010. He chaired the ICE Presidential Commission - “Engineering without Frontiers” - to examine society’s expectations of civil engineers in the 21st Century. He was chair of the ICE Task Group to embed sustainable development into civil engineering curricula and professional development. Paul Jowitt was author of the ICE’s 6th Brunel International Lecture “Engineering Civilisation form the Shadows” (2006) – addressing the issues of Global Poverty and Climate Change.
Paul is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Royal Academy of Engineering. He is a former non-Executive Director of United Utilities Water and a former Board Member of Scottish Water.
He is Chair of the Trustees of the charity Engineers Against Poverty (https://engineersagainstpoverty.org/) and Chair of the Steamship Sir Walter Scott Trust. He is a founder member of "The Edge" – an ICE/RIBA/CIBSE Ginger Group (https://edgedebate.com/) created to increase public and political awareness of the role of engineers and architects. In 2011, Paul received a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to Technology.
