Oliver Lemon is a Professor of Computer Science at Heriot-Watt and an ELLIS Fellow,  specialising in conversational AI,  interactive robotics, and AI safety, with applications in healthcare and assisted living. A former Stanford Research Fellow and NASA Visiting Scientist with over 300 publications, he has held key leadership roles including Academic Lead of the UK National Robotarium, and coordinator of international research projects. He currently serves as Action Editor for Transactions of the ACL (TACL) and provides expert guidance to bodies such as the UK AI Security Institute (AISI), the European Commission, INRIA, EPSRC, and DFG. He bridges the gap between academic research and applications with leaders such as Google Deepmind, Amazon Alexa, PAL robotics,  RASA, UNICEF, and the  NHS.

My research involves Artificial Intelligence techniques related to Natural Language Processing (NLP)  --  in particular Generative AI for conversational systems, interactive robots, and multimodal interfaces.   I have published over 300 peer-reviewed research papers in these areas. I am Director of the Interaction Lab research group and was recently Academic Co-Lead of the National Robotarium. My most recent work involves adversarial approaches to safety evaluations for embodied AI systems and robots powered by Large Language Models (LLMs).
