Personal profile

Research interests

My current research focus is on the self-regulation of recovery periiods in the scheduling of high intensity interval training amongst athletic and general populations.  I am also interested in the relationship between training load and physiological responses in athletic populations, specically in Association Football.

Additional research interest include systems and processes that facilitate effective management and leaderhsip in sport.

I completed my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at Sheffield Hallam University in the field of sport and exercise science. Since graduating I have worked with the English Institute of Sport in Manchester before moving north of the border to take up the position of Head of Sport Science at Heart of Midlothian Football Club, a role I held until 2010.  Since leaving professional football I have worked for Heriot-Watt University and latterly Oriam: Scotlands sports performance centre as Director of Sport, Performance and Health.  During my career I have worked with Scottish Rugby League, Greeat Britain womens Water Polo, the Scottish Football Association and Scottish Squash and Raquetball in various roles relatin to the preperation of athletes for international competition.  I am an accredited member of the UKSCA and a High Performance Accredited physiologist with the British Association of Sport and Exercises Sciences.
