Research interests
Mudassar’s research interests focus on the characterisation of complex subsurface flow systems, with particular emphasis on flow diagnostics and their application to dynamic reservoir analysis. His work involves the use of time-of-flight concepts, streamline-based methods, and tracer diagnostics to identify dominant flow pathways, evaluate sweep efficiency, and support reservoir surveillance, uncertainty reduction, and field development optimisation.
In parallel, Mudassar’s research addresses fracture network modelling, with a focus on naturally fractured and hydraulically fractured reservoirs. This includes discrete fracture network (DFN) modelling, fracture–matrix interaction, and the assessment of fracture geometry and connectivity on flow and transport behaviour. A key interest lies in integrating fracture network models with flow diagnostics to improve reservoir performance prediction and support production, stimulation, and EOR decision-making.
Biography
Mudassar holds an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering and has several years of industry experience across the Middle East, working on oil and gas assets in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. His work focused on the application and deployment of stimulation chemistries and production chemicals, supporting well intervention, production optimisation, and integrity-related challenges in both onshore and offshore fields.
He graduated with an MSc in Reservoir Evaluation and Management in 2015, achieving the highest overall performance in the department and receiving the BP Prize for Excellence. Since October 2015, Mudassar has been serving as an Assistant Professor at the Institute of GeoEnergy Engineering, Heriot-Watt University. He has held several academic leadership roles, including Programme Director for the MSc Reservoir Evaluation and Management from 2018 to 2020, and currently serves as the Programme Director for the MSc Petroleum Engineering programme in Dubai.
