Biography

Michael is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Psychology Department (School of Social Sciences) of Heriot-Watt University.

Michael obtained a BSC(hons) in Biomedical Sciences at Northumbria University (2010) before completing a MRes Neuroscience at Newcastle University (2011). He then completed his PhD Psychology at The Unviersity of Edinburgh (2015), which was funded by an Alzheimer's Society grant, before joining the Psychology Department of Heriot-Watt University as a Postdoctoral Researcher in 2015. In 2016, Michael was awarded a competitive 3-year Fellowship grant from the Alzheimer's Society, and he is now a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Psychology Department of Heriot-Watt University, where he is  using behavioural and electrophysiological methods to investigate the effect of dementia in memory.

Research interests

Michael's research investigates human memory in health and disease, as well as the factors that influence memory. He is particularly interested in the early processing and transformation of new memories following their acquisition. This work is part of a wider area of research being conducted in the Heriot-Watt Memory Lab (www.memorylab.hw.ac.uk).

In Michael's Fellowship project, he is using behavioural and electrophysiological methods to investigate how the brain processes new memories and whether/how this process changes as we grow older, and how these changes differ from people with Alzheimer's disease, who often suffer from severe memory problems.

He also has a keen interest in the role of memory in how we navigate through space, and is using virtual reality methods to investigate this topic.
