I joined the Institute for Place, Environment and Society at Heriot-Watt in August 2024 as Assistant Professor in Climate Change and Sustainability. I've previously held positions in academia in the UK and USA as well as at think-tanks and non-profits and worked for many years as a consultant. Through my position as a Research Fellow in Environmental Justice with the Sussex Sustainability Research Programme (U of Sussex), I was PI on the project ‘Sustainable’ development and atmospheres of violence: experiences of environmental defenders which studied the dynamics of violence(s) against environmental activists in 6 countries (Brazil, Ecuador, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Guinea-Bissau, and DRC). I was also PI on the project Mapping Indigenous rights abuses in Northeastern Brazil / Another Sky which worked with Indigenous students to map the political ecology of rights violations, both collective and individual. We also worked with Indigenous artists’ reflections on the impacts of COVID-19 on those conflicts and on their communities, displayed in an exhibit on our award-winning web platform, Another Sky.
I am currently a Research Affiliate at University of Glasgow with the GALLANT Project which uses a whole-system approach to addressing Glasgow's key environmental challenges whilst considering the co-benefits and trade-offs for public health, wellbeing, and the economy. I also contribute to the Guardians Under Pressure project which is addressing the threats to, and informing the policies to support, environmental defenders and civic spaces affected by initiatives that use local natural resources to mitigate against climate change in Southeast Asia. I am also an Associate at Not1More, a NGO that supports frontline environmental defenders and investigates the root causes of environmental conflict.
