Research interests

Dr Rooney is a Post Doctoral Research Associate interested in the interactions of microbes and development/application of advanced optical microscopy tools to study them. His current research focuses on the application of super resolution and single-molecule localisation microscopy methods to better understand interkingdom interactions between bacteria and fungi mediated by the Type VI Secretion System (T6SS). The T6SS, a toxin-loaded molecular speargun, is used by certain Gram-negative bacteria to target competing cells in the environment. Until recently, T6SS-mediated interactions had only been observed between opposing bacterial strains, but recently anti-fungal specific systems have been documented. Dr Rooney's research centres on discovering the mode of action and the molecular fate of the anti-fungal specific toxin effectors and the T6SS dynamics between bacteria and fungi.

Dr Rooney is an active member of the Microbiology Society and a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society (RMS). Dr Rooney is the current Chair of the RMS's Early Career Committee and a Member of the RMS Life Sciences Section Committee.
