Dr. Kai Seng obtained his BEng (Hons) and PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering, as well as an MSc in Environmental Engineering, in Malaysia. He has both academic and industrial experience, having worked in the polymer industry as a researcher before joining academia.
Dr. Kai Seng is currently a Lecturer, and Program Director in Chemical Engineering at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia and a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). He is actively involved in several voluntary roles within IChemE, including serving on the Membership Engagement Committee and contributing as an Accreditation Assessor and Chartered Engineer Reviewer.
His teaching and research expertise span across microfluidics, transport phenomena, and Separation Process, with a particular focus on bridging engineering fundamentals with life science applications. Professionally, Dr. Kai Seng is committed to strengthening the connection between academia and industry, promoting collaboration that drives sustainable and technology-based solutions across the chemical, bioprocessing, and energy sectors.
Dr. Kai Seng’s research focuses on microfluidic systems and their applications in drug delivery and material synthesis, where he investigates droplet-based encapsulation, mixing, and reaction control for the development of advanced therapeutic and functional materials. His work integrates transport phenomena, reaction engineering, and materials science to design scalable microfluidic platforms that bridge laboratory-scale discovery with industrial manufacturing relevance.
In parallel, he is actively engaged in energy management and process optimisation projects with industry partners, applying chemical engineering principles to achieve measurable sustainability outcomes. His recent collaborations span from palm oil processing plants, focusing on heat recovery and management strategies for CO₂ emission reduction, to the coating and materials industry, developing heat-reflective surface coatings aimed at reducing energy consumption for cooling in buildings and vehicles.
Collectively, his research embodies a translational approach, integrating micro-scale innovation with large-scale process solutions to address global challenges in sustainable manufacturing, energy efficiency, and advanced material development.
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
