Personal profile

Profile Summary

I am an academic and researcher committed to bridging design, technology, and communication to address complex challenges in the creative industries. My expertise spans digital design, interface design, and visual communication, with a particular focus on advancing user-centred solutions in areas such as immersive technologies, context-aware interfaces, and urban media.

By integrating global perspectives and interdisciplinary methodologies, I aim to foster meaningful collaborations that drive innovation in education and research. My passion lies in preparing students and institutions to navigate a rapidly evolving digital landscape while contributing to impactful, real-world outcomes through teaching, research, and international engagement.

Biography

I am an interdisciplinary academic and researcher with expertise in digital design, interface design, and visual communication. My academic journey began in the humanities, and over the years, I have combined my passion for design and technology to build a career at the intersection of research, teaching, and practice. I hold a doctorate in Media from Bauhaus-University Weimar, Germany, where I specialised in interface design and usability, and I also have two MSc degrees in Digital Media and Multimedia Production from prestigious German institutions.

My professional experience spans over a decade of teaching in the UK and Germany, where I have delivered courses in UX/UI design, visual communication, digital services, and media production at institutions such as Heriot-Watt University, De Montfort University, University of Derby, and Bauhaus-University Weimar. My teaching philosophy emphasises the integration of research with practical applications, equipping students with adaptable skills for the ever-evolving creative industries.

My research focuses on how technology and design converge to enhance user interaction and communication. I am particularly interested in context-aware interfaces, immersive reality, urban media, and wayfinding. My interdisciplinary projects have explored diverse topics such as augmented reality for cultural heritage, mobile context-aware design for UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the role of public graphic design in urban environments.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I have actively engaged in international collaborations across Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East. With knowledge of several languages at varying levels, I am committed to fostering internationalisation in higher education, creating global academic networks, and promoting cross-cultural understanding. These efforts aim to bridge academia and industry while driving impactful research in the creative sectors.

Through my teaching, research, and outreach, I aim to make a meaningful contribution to education, design innovation, and global collaboration.

Research interests

My research interests span a wide range of topics at the intersection of technology, design, and communication, including but not limited to:

  1. Context-Aware Interfaces

    • Investigating how interfaces can adapt to users' environments and contexts to enhance usability and engagement in diverse applications, such as mobile apps and urban settings.
  2. Immersive and Augmented Realities

    • Exploring the application of immersive technologies, including augmented and virtual reality, in cultural heritage, education, and urban design to create enriched user experiences.
  3. Wayfinding and Urban Media

    • Analysing the role of visual communication, public graphic design, and digital media in improving navigation and interaction within urban environments.
  4. User Experience (UX) and Interaction Design (IxD)

    • Developing innovative approaches to interface and interaction design that prioritise user needs, accessibility, and inclusivity.
  5. Cultural Heritage and Digital Media

    • Designing digital solutions that merge technology with cultural heritage preservation, fostering engagement through context-aware applications and interactive storytelling.
  6. Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)

    • Studying user interactions with digital systems and interfaces, with a focus on usability and inclusive design principles.

While these areas reflect my primary interests, I am not limited to these topics. I am always looking for ways to explore new and emerging fields, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and embracing innovative challenges that align with the evolving landscape of design and technology.
