Research interests

Dr Sun’s recent research interests include developing cost effective hybrid machining method, design and manufacture of micro-photonics devices, theoretical study of FIB machining process, and developing deterministic fabrication method for FIB machining. He has successfully developed the first nanoscale diamond cutting tools that enable the fabrication of nanostructures over large area with high efficiency. Acknowledge of his achievements in research to date are evident by the award of the Heidenhain scholarship for research achievement by the European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology (EUSPEN) in 2009, an opening presentation on American Society of Precision Engineering (ASPE) in 2010, and the award of EPS Thesis Prize at Heriot-Watt University in 2012. He has over 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences, 1 invited book chapter (“Lecture Notes in Nanoscale Science and Technology - FIB Nanostructures”, Springer, 2013.) and several invited presentations on international conferences.
He has been involved in several industrial projects with global companies such as Contour Fine Tooling Ltd., Renishaw Plc., Spanoptic Ltd., and ST Microelectronics Ltd, where his knowledge and professionalism greatly contributed the outcomes. His collaboration with TESCAN s.r.o. led to a Research Capital Investment Fund (RCIF) supported project on nanofabrication and nanocharacterisation.

He is also the reviewer for many peer-reviewed journals such as “Applied Surface Science” and “Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)”, etc.

Biography

Dr. Sun received his BSc degree (Physics) in 2004 and MSc degree (Particle Physics) in 2007, both from Peking University, China. In 2007, he joined the National Institute of Metrology (China) as an engineer working on research and development of a national primary standard facility. After that he returned to study for micro- and nano-fabrication at Heriot-Watt University and obtained his PhD degree in 2012. He developed a deterministic fabrication method for the fabrication of 3D micro- and nano-structures by focused ion beam machining and won the EPS thesis Prize. Following on from his PhD, he worked as a research associate in an EPSRC-funded Heriot-Watt Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre (HW-IMRC) project where he successfully developed the first nano-scale diamond cutting tools enabling the fabrication of nanostructures over large area with high efficiency. In 2013, he was appointed as a lecturer in School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, where he leads a micro- and nano- manufacturing research group and manages an SEM/FIB.
