Personal profile

Research interests

Area of expertise - I am a sociologist of work who investigates the broad spectrum of workplace behaviour, particularly that of emotional labour, managerial control, precarity, dirty work, and labour exploitation.

Research Methods Expertise - I am an ethnographic researcher, completing two ethnographic studies in the UK’s public house sector. This involved working as a bartender while observing collegial behaviour and the interactions between worker and customer. Additionally, I am well versed in semi-structured interviewing as well as a range of observational methods including observant participation, participant and non-participant observations. Thematic analysis has historically been my chosen technique to analyse my collected data.

Disciplinary Intersections - My research intersects with a variety of literature including economic geography, criminology, psychology, and organizational behaviour.

Key Research Collaborations - As of 2025, I am currently collaborating on a research project with Dr Ash Watson (UNSW Sydney) and Maria Volkova (University of Exeter) on AI companions and human emotions. Particularly investigating the ethicality of AI companionship services, user engagement, and the outsourcing of emotional labour from humans to artificial intelligence.

Funded Projects - The entirety of my PhD was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council based in the UK.

Biography

I hold a BA (Hons) in Sociology from the University of Hull, an MSc in Social Research from Goldsmiths, University of London, and a PhD in the Sociology of Work from University College London. This academic journey ceased in May 2024. However, since then, I have been working on my research output in academic journals including feminist criminology, sociological research online, the journal of organizational ethnography, and labour and industry. Additionally, I have been serving as a volunteer for the British Sociological Association since 2021 in various roles including for the postgraduate forum and the early career researcher forum. In these roles I have assisted in organising publishing workshops, reviewing funding applications, as well as holding conference events (e.g., surviving and thriving at a conference).

Roles & Responsibilities

I am an Assistant Professor situated in the Management department at Heriot Watt, Dubai Campus. Prior to my appointment in this role at the beginning of 2026, I was a Lecturer in Organisation Behaviour at the University of Worcester, and a Postgraduate Teaching Assistant at UCL’s Social Research Institute and Geography Department.

I currently hold the Associate Fellowship of Higer Education from the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA)
