Edward Owens is a Professor of Sustainable Energy with an interest in Demand Management, Energy Forecasting, Home Automation, Environmental Engineering, Renewable Energy and Occupancy detection. He is a graduate of the BSc in Applied Physics at Strathclyde University, Glasgow and upon graduation with a first class honours in 1985 took up a post as a Research Associate in the Department of Offshore Engineering at Heriot-Watt University. In 1990 he was appointed as an experimental officer and took on the role of Technical Manager of the Fluid Loading and Instrumentation Centre. He became a lecturer in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2003 and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2006. Professor Owens was the MSc Director for the Civil Engineering Discipline from 2006 until 2010 when he became the Civil Engineering Director of Studies at Heriot-Watt University. He is the Director of Planning for the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society and is the Energy Technology Partnerships national Theme Coordinator for Energy Utilization in Buildings.  Professor Owens is currently the Director of the Heriot Watt Energy Academy with a remit of promoting interdisciplinary research in energy across the University.  He is also a visiting Professor at Yunnan University in Kunming, China and Deputy Diretor of the Heriot-Watt Energy Academy.
