In 2016, Dr. Anagnostou joined the Heriot Watt University, Institute of Signals, Sensors and Systems (ISSS), where he is currently supported by the H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Research Fellowship.
Dr. Dimitris E. Anagnostou (SMIEEE) received the BSEE degree from the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece, in 2000, and the MSEE and Ph.D. degrees from the Univ. of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM, USA, in 2002 and 2005, respectively. From 2005 to 2006, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Georgia Tech, Atlanta, GA, USA. In 2007, he joined as Assistant Professor the SD School of Mines & Technology, SD, USA, where he was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. In 2016, Dr. Anagnostou joined the Heriot Watt University, Institute of Signals, Sensors and Systems (ISSS).
Dr. Anagnostou’s research involves electromagnetic devices (antennas, microwave circuits, RADARS, sensors, etc) for space satellites, defense, assisted living, and consumer electronics applications. His research includes but is not limited to:
- reconfigurable / multifunctional, autonomous, flexible, electrically-small and miniaturized antennas, arrays, and microwave circuits and components, artificial dielectrics and metamaterials; 5G Massive MIMO arrays;
- functional materials such as phase-change VO2;
- direct-write and security printing nanoinks; "green" RF electronics (on paper and organics);
- hybrid and monolithic integration (e.g. antennas on PV cells), RF-MEMS; microwave packaging;
- electromagnetic measurements and metrology;
- artificial neural networks and deep learning applications in electromagnetics; digital and medical image processing.
Dr. Anagnostou has received many prestigious awards, such as:
- IEEE John D. Kraus Antenna Award by the IEEE,
- DARPA Young Faculty Award by the U.S. Department of Defense
- H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship (Reintegration)

- Young Alumni Award by the School of Engineering, University of New Mexico
- Honored Faculty Award by SDSMT (4 times)
- Distinguished Scientist Living Abroad by the Hellenic Ministry of Defense,
and many others. His students have also been recognized with many IEEE and university awards such as Engineering Prize (HWU) and Best PhD Thesis (SDSMT).
Dr. Anagnostou serves or has served as Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation (2010-2016) and the IET Microwaves, Antennas and Propagation (since 2015). Also as guest editor for IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters (two Special Issues), guest editor for Hindawi Intl’ Journal of Antennas and Propagation (two Special Issues) and other. He is a member of the IEEE-APS Educational Committee, a member of the Technical Program Committee (TPC) and Session Chair for IEEE-APS and EuCAP Intl’ Symposia, and as a reviewer for more than 20 international journals (including Nature and IEEE Transactions). He is a member of Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) Honor Society, ASEE, and of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) where he is registered Professional Engineer (PE).
