Personal profile

Research interests

My interests are in Media and Popular Music in France and Britain (1960s-) with particular focus on representations of generation/ageing, gender, nostalgia and charity. My current book project focuses on Popular Music, Nostalgia and the Media in Contemporary France.

Recent projects include a BA/Leverhulme-funded study (2013-15) of the ways in which television, popular music and charity have combined in France over the last thirty years to produce the hugely successful annual benefit concerts Les Enfoirés in aid of the Restos du Coeur charity, drawing on archive research carried out at the French broadcasting archives (Inathèque, Paris).

I recently co-organised French Media Research Group conferences (FMRG 22, 23 & 24) on Video Games (with Hugh Dauncey and Jonathan Ervine) and on Media, Memory & Nostalgia (with Hugh Dauncey) and have co-edited special issues of Modern and Contemporary France on Media, Memory & Nostalgia and Volume! La revue des musiques populaires- The journal of popular music studies on Popular Music & Nostalgia.

PhD Supervision

I have supervised PhD projects across a range of topics covering media, music, cinema and translation/ interpreting, and would be particularly interested in nostalgia- or charity-related proposals in French/Francophone and other contexts.
