Research interests

Area of Expertise

My research focuses on intersectional inequality, student success and attrition, and educational inequity within global online higher education programmes.

Research Methods Expertise

My methodological expertise lies in the application of mixed methods approaches to investigate intersectional inequality. My work focuses on the use of Multilevel Analysis of Individual Heterogeneity and Discriminatory Accuracy (MAIHDA) to examine patterns of success and inequality within global online education programmes, supplemented by qualitative comparisons of lived experiences across demographic strata.

I also have experience in the application of Social Network Analysis (SNA), including the use of Exponential Random Graph Models (ERGMs).

Disciplinary Intersections

My research spans a range of disciplinary intersections, including intersectionality, critical theory, pedagogy, online education, management, and behaviour change. I also have a strong interest in research philosophy and its application to pedagogy and educational inequity.

Biography

I joined Heriot-Watt University in 2022 as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Social Research Methods in the Department of Research Methods and Practice, within the School of Social Sciences. Alongside this role, I am undertaking a PhD in Management, investigating the role of intersectionality on student attrition rates and antecedents within a global online postgraduate programme. In 2024 I became an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).

I previously studied Physical Activity and Health at Edinburgh Napier University, where I also worked as a practitioner and researcher to help develop the physical activity for mental health referral programme. Within this, I would deliver individualised training programmes and motivational interviewing counselling sessions to support students suffering from mild-moderate mental health challenges.
