Biography

I am an Assistant Professor in Intercultural Communications in the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies at Heriot-Watt University. With a background in teaching English for Academic Purposes, my teaching now focuses on academic literacy, applied linguistics, and intercultural communication.

With a particular interest in sociocultural linguistics. My scholarship explores academic literacies, language and learning, assessment design, and intercultural communication, with an interest in supporting student success in higher education.

Alongside my role at Heriot-Watt University, I work as an Effective Learning Adviser at Queen Margaret University, where I support students in developing their academic literacy skills. I also have extensive experience in large scale English language assessment within the UK higher education sector.

Profile Summary

I am an Assistant Professor in Intercultural Communications whose teaching and scholarship focus on academic literacy, applied linguistics, and intercultural communication. My work is informed by a strong interest in sociocultural linguistics and in supporting student success through inclusive approaches to teaching, learning, and assessment. Alongside my university teaching, I have extensive experience in large scale English language assessment. My work across academic and professional services gives me a broad perspective on how students develop academic literacy and transition successfully into higher education. I was recently awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in recognition of my commitment to teaching and learning in higher education.

Roles & Responsibilities

As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies, I teach and assess across a range of undergraduate programmes, with particular responsibility for academic literacy, applied linguistics, intercultural communication, critical writing, and academic skills. I contribute to curriculum development and assessment design working collaboratively with colleagues to support high quality teaching and learning. I also develop teaching materials and learning activities designed to support students in developing their academic, linguistic, and intercultural understanding.
