Personal profile

Research interests

I am a Professor of Marketing in Business Management Department at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK. My research has a dual focus: ‘marketing management’ and ‘consumer research’ with a particular interest in “tourism, leisure, and consumption and the environment” areas.

In recent years, Babak's research has focused on ‘consumer engagement’ and related concepts. Service industries (such as tourism) are vessels for interaction, where the visitor engages with places and the inherent cultures at destination(s), but also creates value-in-use through their experiences in-situ. To develop this theoretically, Babak had undertaken several projects to explore and subsequently gain an in-depth, contextualised understanding of the stakeholders’ journey through engaging cultural experiences, as well as the consequence of such interactions, in order to achieve value within cultural sites.

Over the years, I have over 100 academic publications including 3* and 4* journals with high impact factors. I am the chairman of tourism marketing special interest group in Academy of  Marketing, UK., and currently serving as the senior editor of  Tourism Management Perspectives and associate editor of The Service Industries Journal. I have edited a special issue for Journal of Marketing Management. I am also currently editing five special issues on:

1. ‘Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility in hospitality and tourism’ International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, [ABS 3*, impact factor: 2.874]

2. ‘Nature-based Solutions in Hospitality and Tourism Management’, Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research, [ABS 2*, impact factor: 2.685]

3. ‘Consumer Engagement in the Tourism Industry: New Trends and Implications for Research’ the Service Industries Journal [ABS 2* , impact factor: 1.258]

4. ‘Innovative mixed and multi method approaches to hospitality and tourism research’, International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, [ABS 3*, impact factor: 2.874]

5. ‘Consumer experience management and customer journeys in tourism, hospitality and events’, Tourism Management Perspectives, [ABS 2*, impact factor: 1.779]

I am regularly invited speaker in USA, Middle East and UK. I have organised and hosted the 12th International Colloquium on Arts, Heritage, Non-profit and Social Marketing Conference (Academy of Marketing) in Heriot-Watt University in September 2013 and also hosted Tourism Marketing special interest group conference (Academy of Marketing) in Heriot-Watt University in December 2017.

At an institutional level, I have provided academic leadership for over several academic colleagues, supervised and graduated several PhD students. I have also secured over £2.5m in funding (including Horizon 2020 and KTP). From a teaching and learning perspective, I have taught at different university levels including BSc, MSc, MBA and MRes. I use interactive, experiential and engaging learning methods in my teaching.
