Research interests

Experimental measurement and thermodynamic modelling of fluid phase equilibria (hydrocarbons, water, hydrates, organic inhibitors).
Water content of natural gases, inhibitor distribution, aqueous gas solubility.
Gas Chromatography (GC) analysis of fluids.
I am involved in several projects on various aspects of gas hydrates, including, their formation and prevention in subsea transfer lines and drilling operations, design and testing of low dosage hydrate inhibitors, kinetics of gas hydrate formation and inhibition, positive applications of gas hydrates as well as the phase behaviour of acid gases, oil and gas reservoir fluids. Main research projects and activities:

Joint Industrial Project (JIP) - Gas Hydrates and Flow Assurance Joint Industrial Project (this project addresses mainly thermodynamic issues associated with gas hydrates)
JIP - Flow Assurance: Hydrate Monitoring and Early Warning System (developing methods for determining the hydrate safety margin, and (2) developing techniques for detecting initial hydrate formation in pipelines).
JIP - Flow Assurance: Hydraflow, Avoiding Hydrate Problems (Transport of hydrate slurries).
JIP - Reservoir Fluid Studies (this project addresses mainly the phase behaviour of oil and gas reservoir fluids).
Supervision of PhD students and Mentor/help MSc students.

Biography

Prof Antonin Chapoy holds a DEA (MSc) in Chemical Engineering (Université d'Aix-Marseille, Marseille, France, 2001), an MSc in Energy Engineering (Institut Universitaire des Systémes Thermiques et Industriels, Marseille, France, 2001) and a PhD in Chemical Engineering (Paris School of Mines, France, 2004). Following completion of his PhD, he joined the Centre for Gas Hydrate Research at Heriot-Watt as a Research Associate. Dr Chapoy has over 15 years research experience of gas hydrate and hydrocarbon phase behaviour, and has managed a wide range of projects, predominately sponsored by industry. Currently a Research Fellow at Heriot-Watt, he is first or co-author on over 150 refereed journal and conference publications, primarily concerning gas hydrates, flow assurance and water-hydrocarbon phase behaviour.
