Personal profile

Biography

I am an Associate Professor in the Learning and Teaching Academy, leading work to enhance assessment and feedback across the university. I am the Programme Director for the PGCert in Teaching & Learning, and I also lead the course ‘Reframing Assessment and Feedback’. Beyond Heriot-Watt I am co-convenor of the Scottish Higher Education Developers Special Interest Group on assessment.

My research is currently focused on assessment and feedback - and in particular on fundamental conceptual questions around contemporary research and practice - and in the past I have also published on student engagement, student surveys, and the philosophy of education.

Prior to joining Heriot-Watt, I worked at the University of Strathclyde, and before that at the Higher Education Academy.

My background is in the philosophy of mind and language, and my thesis defended externalism about mental content.
